South Lake Tahoe Material Recovery Facility
and
Transfer Station

The South Tahoe Transfer Station became a complete Material Recovery Facility in March of 1995 providing single-stream separation of recyclable materials.
Visit this page for recovery programs and statistics information.

Located at 2140 Ruth Avenue, the facility is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is co-located with the Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

When visiting, please stop at the cashier's booth for directions to other areas around the facility.

At the onset of operation as a Material Recovery Facility, we began or improved the separation of:
  • Aluminum Cans
  • Glass Bottles and Containers
  • Plastic #1 PETE
  • Plastic #2 HDPE
  • Rigid Plastics
  • Cardboard
  • Newspaper
  • Office and Mixed Paper
  • Magazines and Catalogs
  • Tin
  • Metals: scrap ferrous and non-ferrous
  • Appliances
  • Milled Wood
  • Green Waste: slash, chips, pine needles and yard trimmings
  • Stumps
  • Construction Debris: concrete, asphalt and dirt
  • Tires
These items are then processed for transport to recycling facilities and other end users.

Hazardous and universal waste materials are also removed from the waste stream in the MRF.
  • Paints, Solvents, Oils, other Chemical Products, Batteries, Compressed Gas Cylinders
  • Light Bulbs, Small Electronic Devices, Televisions and Computer Monitors
These items are then processed at our hazardous waste facility.

How can you help?
  • If you are bringing a mixed load to the facility, presort and separate materials to improve unloading and handling at the facility.
  • Be sure recyclables such as cardboard are clean and free of contamination.
  • Remember that the Household Hazardous Waste Facility is only open on Tuesdays & Saturdays.
